SmugMug > all-time keyword > cerebral palsy > Valeria after successful muscle lengthening surgery at A.I DuPont Children's Hospital (Wilmington, DE) in May of 2006. The surgery was needed because normal bone growth in length is determined by genetics but muscles have to be stretched by exercise. The leg muscles especially need the load of body weight to lengthen them as bones grow. Children who cannot stand often suffer muscle contracture due to growth spurts. Contracture will inevitably deform the bones if it is not released. Surgery to cut the muscle encasing fascia allowing it to stretch is one way to solve the problem. Valeria had 3 two inch incisions in each leg.
